Critical Assessment Of American Exceptionalism And Erosion Of Liberal Internationalism

Abstract
The period after the cold war has witnessed the reaffirmation and intensification of United State commitment towards actualizing the liberal international order. To this end, the country has dedicated enormous energy and resources in actualizing this gigantic objective. This paper is a critical appraisal of America’s journey to coherently pursued liberalized political and economic agenda across the globe. Through a systematic review of extant literature, this paper discusses how American exceptionalism has taken a center stage in the formation, pursuit and implementation of its foreign policy. America exceptionalism holds that United State is unique in its history, politics and social and cultural life among the comity of nations. As such, superiority of these uniqueness in the pursuit of the country’s foreign policy has dramatically induced the United State to abandoned its preached liberal internationalism in favour of national interests. The paper concludes that America’s external force is antithetical to other great powers thereby posing hazard to peaceful international environments. The paper recommends that America’s foreign policy should align with its core principles of liberal internationalism, rooted in pursuing dialogue rather than confrontation with other major world powers.
