Special Issue Vol. 1 No 1 2024: Introduction

About this Special Issue: Hunger, Protests and Restructuring in Nigeria

It is widely asserted that the promotion of regional development has always resulted to higher levels of socio-economic development irrespective whether the country or region is in the developed, developing and least developing world. African societies are no exception to this assertion. In recent times, there are loud calls for accelerating the pace of growth and development in Nigeria. These calls have become louder with events of wide-spread ‘hunger’ protests and agitations within the Nigerian society.

Given growing complexities of economic, political and social landscapes in Nigeria despite efforts of governments to renew hopes and chart a new course for the prosperity of Nigerians, protests and agitations persist. Hence, evidence-based researched articles are hereby invited from scholars and researchers from diverse disciplines for a special issue on hunger, protests and restructuring in Nigeria. This special journal issue interrogated the links between the causes and nature of hunger; and complex issues around the organization and management of protests against hunger and bad governance in Nigeria. Authors paid attention to the following issues: theoretical and conceptual description of hunger, protests and restructuring in Nigeria; socio-economic impacts and media coverage of #EndBadGovernance protest; hunger, fertility and prevalence of extra-marital affairs; minimum wage, artificial hunger and food insecurity in Nigeria; Nigerian legal frameworks and constitutional review; security agencies and human rights violation in Nigeria; food prices, inflation and economic reforms; hunger, mosquito net ownership and malaria prevention; bad governance, banditry, violent crime and terrorism; resource control, decentralization and regional development; corruption-free fuel subsidy regime and poverty reduction; elderly persons and child protection in fuel subsidy removal regime; nationalism, self-determination and ethnicity; social media and youth development; protests and development financing; case studies of hunger protests from affected States in Nigeria.
